Foods You Might Not Know That Is Bad for Your Brain

Spending your day-off at home may bore you because your body is used to the other activities you usually do. Eating is a part of an individual's everyday activity that restores energy. But did you know that the brain, just like the other organs of the body, needs food to perform efficiently? An article released by Medical News Today, it says that the brain needs certain nutrients to stay healthy. National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) said that newly described influences on dietary factors had revealed some of the vital instruments that are accountable for the action of diet on brain health and mental function. 

According to The Healthy, following a healthy diet is vital in maintaining optimal brain health. Harvard Medical School mentioned some of the good foods for the brain, such as Green leafy vegetables, fatty fish, berries, walnuts, and tea, and coffee. Harvard stated that these foods have health components that are known to support brain health. But did you know that there are foods that do the opposite of your brain? 

Here are some foods the brain hates and does harm to eat when eaten continuously.

Sugar-sweetened Beverages

According to Very Well Mind, excess sugar is harmful throughout the body. They also said that elevated glucose in the bloodstream could be harmful to the brain, resulting in slowed cognitive function. Wesley Delbridge, RDN, and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition Dietetics said in an interview with The Healthy that High amounts of sugar cause neurological damage. That is why fruit juice, energy drink, sweet tea, and soda is bad for health.

Tuna

Although tuna is in the highlight because of its Omega-3 Fatty acid that is good for the brain, tuna has mercury content and other types of seafood such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish. 

Fried Foods

According to Alternative Daily, saturated fats in fried foods can cause difficulty for the brain in controlling what an individual eats. They also mentioned a study that says eating fatty foods affects the hypothalamus, an area of the brain that helps regulate hunger. 

Refined Carbohydrates

The Healthy reminded the people about the consumption of white bread, white rice, white pasta does not only raise the blood sugar but also harm the brain. They also mentioned a study published in 2015 that shows these products heighten post-menopausal women's risk of depression.

Processed Meats

study published in 2020, as mentioned in an article by Alzheimer's Research UK, shows a link to Dementia. The researchers found that charcuterie (processed meats) was linked to the consumption of snack foods and characterized a diet that can be linked to Dementia.

Excess Alcohol

In an article published by Alcohol Rehab Guide, alcohol is a toxin. They added that the alcohol subsequently moves through the blood-brain barrier affecting the brain's neurons directly. They also emphasized research showing sustained periods of drinking causes overall shrinkage of the brain.

Incorporating these brain-healthy foods can help you take care of your brain. Do it one at a time if you cannot drastically change your habits, and you will learn to stay away from them over time.
