Male Drugs and Anti-Depressant Pills Get Swapped in a Factory

Accidental swapping of drugs of male anti-impotence and anti-depressants triggers pharmaceutical company AvKARE to recall their pills nationwide.

The company announcement published in the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA)AvKARE voluntarily recalls one lot of their Sildenafil 100 mg tablets and one lot of Trazodone 100 mg tablets.

According to Gizmodo, FDA notes that the two pills were inadvertently mixed during the packaging or bottling process. The News Observer also adds that the FDA alert also states that the reason for the recall of the said drugs is the product mix up of the two drugs which were packages at a third-party facility. Gizmodo furthers that taking these two 'accidentally' will possess dangers.

According to McMaster, a review result demonstrates stopping one or more unnecessary medication can lead to health benefits such as fewer falls, and may even lengthen an individual's life.

When you put the two swapped drugs into account, the story simply changes. US FDA reports that unintentional consumption of sildenafil may pose serious health effects to consumers who have underlying medical issues.

The federal agency added in the alert that Sildenafil may interact with nitrates that can be found in some of the prescription drugs that may result in lowering of blood pressure to unsafe levels.

This only means that people with diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease must not take Sildenafil.

On the Other hand, FDA furthers that unintentional consumption of Trazodone may result in somnolence or sedation, constipation, dizziness, and blurred vision.

Gizmodo notes that this is concerning that elderly patients might be getting an antidepressant-like Trazodone when they are trying to work on something else.

What are Sildenafil and Trazodone?

According to Medline PlusSildenafil is the anti-impotence drug for males. WebMD adds that although the drugs are used to treat the male's sexual function, they emphasized that the drug does not protect an individual from sexually transmitted diseases.

WebMD also reports that the dosage of the drug is usually based on the medical condition of the user response to treatment, and other medication the user is taking.

On the other hand, Drugs.com defines the medication like an antidepressant that belongs to the group of drugs called serotonin receptor antagonists and reuptake inhibitors. (SARIs). They added that this drug helps in improving the mood, appetite, and energy levels alongside its effect of diminishing anxiety and insomnia related to depression.

Medline Plus warns the people, mentioning a study that demonstrates a small number of children, young adults, and teenagers who took antidepressants like Trazodone during clinical studies became suicidal.

I have a bottle from AvKARE, what should I do?

FDA reports that the pharmaceutical company has already implemented action on the situation. They further that AvKARE is contacting every distributor and customer and is arranging for recalls of their product.

The News Observer notes that the FDA encourages people who have the bottles to contact the pharmaceutical company and report any incidence of consumption of the product to a medical professional.
