Five Supplements You Should Take With Precaution

Vitamins and minerals promise good health and benefits for your body. It is known to suffice the daily ideal nutrients to help the body perform better. According to 2019 data of the American Osteopathic Association, almost 4 in 5 American adults, or 86 percent of them, consume vitamin supplements. She Finds added that a balanced and healthy diet has gaps that need to be filled, so vitamins are ideal as supplements.

However, taking too many vitamins can have effects that are uncomfortable and can be serious at times. She Finds notes five of the vitamins an individual should consider taking cautiously.

Vitamin C

Being one of the safest and most effective nutrients, according to WebMD, vitamin C can really help in the process of your system. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in some foods such as citrus fruits. They added that this vitamin is also important for the biosynthesis of collagen, L-carnitine, neurotransmitters, and protein metabolism.

However, it can be harmful in some ways. In an interview with She Finds, Valley Behavioral Health Chief Medical Officer Benjamin Todd Thatcher said that excessive vitamin C intake could cause stones in the kidney. WebMD also added that excessive consumption of this vitamin could cause nausea, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. According to Mayo Clinic, the ideal consumption of vitamin C for adults is 65 to 90 milligrams a day.

Calcium

National Osteoporosis Foundation said that aside from keeping the bones and teeth strong, calcium helps in blood clotting, muscle contraction, and heartbeat. They added that our body could not produce our own calcium, but food with calcium is easily available. Before taking a bunch of calcium bottles to the drugstore, Dr. Thatcher said in an interview; he finds that calcium supplements should be taken with utmost care. He said that calcium could affect the artery walls in the aged body, which can cause heart diseases. Mayo Clinic added that too much calcium level in the blood could weaken the bones and create kidney stones.

Vitamin D

According to Healthline, vitamin D is essential for absorbing calcium, the immune system, and bone protection. It is usually garnered from the sun whenever you go out for an early morning jog or just a morning stroll. Mayo Clinic said that too much vitamin D through supplements could cause intoxication. They added that this condition could cause high calcium levels in the blood, which can progress to bone pain and kidney problems.

Multivitamins

Multivitamins promise a lot of nutrients in just a small tablet. In the interview, She Finds Dr. Thatcher warns the citizens because, according to him, they are largely synthetic.  He added that getting nutrients in vegetables and fruits would be better.


Fish Oil

This health promising capsule is also in the limelight of pills to be taken in proportion. According to Healthline, some studies suggest that too much fish oil can increase the taker's blood sugar because omega-3 can stimulate the production of glucose in the body. In his interview, Dr. Thatcher added that too much fish oil could lead to stomach bleeding, other digestion issues, and nausea.

While these vitamins are vital for the body's performance, remember to take them in moderation to avoid certain conditions affecting your quality of living. Although they are beneficial, remember that there is also caution when taking them.
